My proposed new business card
Posted on November 12, 2008 at 3:05am
I’m off to a networking meeting in central London on Thursday evening, so I’m hoping to drum up some interest from potential future clients. Unfortunately, I don’t yet have any business cards, so earlier this week I was putting one together to get printed off to take with me.
It turns out, though, that I don’t have the cash flow right now to get them printed in time — it’s a choice of fast or cheap, not both. As that does mean that I have a little longer to mull over the design of my new business cards, I thought I’d give a sneak peak, and ask for any suggestions anyone may have.
In the meantime, I’m going to be listening out for the postman to bring me a new printer cartridge, so that I can run a few dozen of these babies off to take with me later in the week.
Update (11/02/2009): I just received my order of business cards in the post yesterday! I’m pretty happy with how they came out — if you want to take a look, you can see them on my Flickr account: New Business Cards for Rob Barrett Design

Very nice, I’m sure you “wow”-ed the pants off the crowd! Reminds me that I need a redesign myself.

Brilliant card. Your name really stands out, which is more important than anything. brilliant typography, congratulations!

Thanks Joann! The meet-up is tomorrow night, so I’ve not had the chance to wow anyone just yet. I won’t have these to hand out, sadly, but I’m hoping to print out a few dozen of the front side tomorrow. Not ideal, but better than nothing.
I really appreciate the feedback, José. Good to know when somebody thinks you’re doing something right :-)

Rob, absolutely love the newly designed business card. I’ve been wanting to make one for myself but haven’t gotten around to it yet. Did you design yours using Illustrator?

Thanks David! Yes, I designed this in Illustrator. It would’ve been easier for me to make it in Photoshop, seeing as my website design was made with that, but with such a heavily type-dependent design as this, it really needs the true vector text.
Force yourself to get around to making cards for yourself! I’d been meaning for ages to do this, and in the end it only took a little spare time over the course of two days to get to this. It’s easily doable, you just have to set the time aside!

The back is beautiful. Brilliant Typo and I like the grey and white. It’s a beautiful card.
However, I don’t like the blue bar with the pinstripes.

Ok, yeah I figured you must have used Illustrator. Unfortunately I don’t have a whole of skills with Illustrator…but you’re right – I need to force myself to do it one of these days. :)
Thanks for giving me a bit of business card inspiration! Have a great day! :)

Great design for business cards. They are very attractive and would draw the interest of almost anyone that sees them, including myself.

Simon: Thanks, man :-) I know you weren’t a fan of the blue bar when I first showed you the design. I still think it needs to stay in though, to help tie in recognition when somebody visits my site after seeing the card.
David: Cool, glad I could provide some motivation! Let me know what you come up with!
AJ: Thanks for the comment! I love the front page of your site — it reminds me of being at the beach! I noticed you added me to your sidebar links as well, thanks a lot for that! I’ll keep trying to come up with the goods to justify that ;-)

like it.
only thought, and i know it’s part of your site branding, the diagonal lines on the right of the card are a bit distracting. love the cleanness of the rest, they seem to crowd the card.
the blue bar is cool accent, if it was half the height that it currently is, how does it look?

Thanks, @dmx! Glad to hear your take on the design. I think I’ll be playing some more with it later this week, so I’ll definitely see what it looks like with a thinner divider bar.

I like how you put a call to action and a list of your services on the back of the card. It sure beats nothing.
